Mercury exposure, a form of metal poisoning, occurs when people come into contact with mercury or its compounds. Mercury is a heavy metal, and all forms of mercury can produce toxicity or death with less than a gram. Elemental mercury causes damage by blocking blood vessels. Mercury exists in three oxidation states:

  • Zero oxidation state: as vapor or liquid metal
  • Mercurous state: as inorganic salts
  • Mercuric state: as either inorganic salts or organomercury compounds

The effects of mercury exposure differ depending on the form. Common toxicities include damage to the brain, kidneys, and lungs. In severe cases, mercury poisoning can manifest as specific diseases such as acrodynia (pink disease), Hunter-Russell syndrome, or Minamata disease. Therefore, identifying and eliminating the source of exposure is critical. Unfortunately, mercury is prevalent in our air and possibly in dental fillings.

Some toxic effects of mercury are partially or wholly reversible, either through specific therapy or natural elimination once exposure ceases. Autopsy findings suggest a half-life of inorganic mercury in human brains of 27.4 years. Heavy or prolonged exposure can cause irreversible damage, especially in developing fetuses, infants, and young children. Young’s syndrome is suspected to be a long-term consequence of early childhood mercury poisoning. Potential cancer risk: Studies in animals suggest that mercuric chloride may increase the risk of various tumors, while methylmercury may cause kidney tumors. Due to these findings, the EPA classifies both mercuric chloride and methylmercury as potential human carcinogens.

Fluorescent lamps contain mercury, a potential health hazard if inhaled. These bulbs typically hold elemental mercury, which can exist as a liquid or vapor at room temperature.  If broken indoors, they can release harmful amounts of mercury vapor.

In this course, we discuss the dangers of mercury and potential exposure sources and how to address them. You will learn about the mainstream medical approach and the pros and cons of their processes.

    5.0

This is a very informative course! It’s quite shocking with help and relief in the end! Very good course, that everyone should take at one time or other. Should be broadcasted on the news. But, we know how the governments hate for us to inform ourselves! Thank you very much for this information!

Everybody should take this course!!! Even if you are one of the lucky ones without amalgam in the mouth you still have mercury in you. Mercury is EVERYWHERE nowadays; the water you drink, the meat/fish you eat and the air you breath. Great course, with different detox methods and good information. A much needed subject that never gets talked about!

    Useful Information

    4.0

This has been useful as an introductory course to the subject matter of heavy metal toxicity. It isn’t fully detailed but gives good research ideas if you’re interested in finding further specific materials on any of the treatments suggested. This is very basic and doesn’t delve deeply into the topics presented but does give a good overview with interesting side notes.
